Sam – Multi-Instrumentalist & Music Educator
Hey, I’m Sam. I’m the kid that was setting up my mom’s pots and pans in a semicircle in the living room and using her wooden cooking spoons as drumsticks before I was even in school. Eventually I broke enough of her cooking spoons that my parents bought me a drum and some real drumsticks and signed me up for piano lessons so I could play drums in the school band when I got to 4th grade.
I got my first drum set in 5th grade and started writing music but realized I needed a bass line. So, I bought a bass and learned to play it so that I could write that bass line in my head. Then I came up with a guitar solo, naturally I then bought a guitar and learned how to play so I could write that solo in my head. By the time I got to college I was recording and producing and that’s when I realized I needed to write a flute piece for one song, and then a sax piece for the next, and then a trumpet for the next and so on and so forth. Now I teach and play almost every instrument we offer!
There are still so many instruments I want to learn and try. I strongly believe in forever education especially in the world of music. My regiment for learning any new instrument boils down to 2 major concepts: Practice and Fun. Technique and performance come from practice and time spent working at it, but motivation and emotion come from having fun and having an interest in what you’re playing.
My teaching style is structured yet flexible, often focusing the first part of the lesson on fundamentals and the second part focusing on a goal, reach, or just plain fun song that you want to work on. If you’re just starting off, or have been playing for years and are looking for pointers and tips, you can expect an engaging, fun, and motivating experience tailored just for you and your musical goals.
